Members Q&A
Members Questions
Why should I help?
The Committee are unpaid volunteers.
They provide:
- a functioning bar
- events and entertainment
- a safe and compliant building
- organised activities
They cannot run every event or activity for hundreds of members.
If everyone waits for someone else, the Club cannot function.
What do volunteers actually do?
Everything members enjoy.
Volunteers help run:
- events
- raffles
- sports teams
- community groups
- entertainment nights
- maintenance days
- seasonal activities (e.g. decorations)
- charity collections
Without volunteers, most activities stop.
I’m not a “committee person” — what can I do?
You don’t need a role or title.
You can help by:
- organising one event a year
- joining or supporting a group
- helping run quizzes, raffles, or bingo
- assisting with setup or clear-down
- helping with maintenance or decorating
- promoting the Club to friends
- supporting other members
Small contributions from many people make a big difference.
Will I be expected to volunteer?
No.
Participation is encouraged, not required.
The aim is a shift in culture:
- from spectators
- to participants
Even occasional involvement helps.
What do I actually get for my £30?
You receive:
- legal membership of the Club
- access to a private members’ environment
- use of facilities
- the ability to bring guests
- access to member pricing
- voting rights and participation in meetings
- a say in how the Club is run
But the atmosphere, events, and activities only exist if members contribute.
Why is participation more important now?
Because the Club faces:
- competition from pubs
- rising operating costs
- an ageing membership
- limited volunteer capacity
- the need to modernise
The Club only thrives when members create activity — not just attend it.
How do the proposed rules support this?
The rules clarify that:
- membership includes participation
- events and groups are member-led
- volunteers operate within a clear structure
- support is available for those who get involved
- the Committee focuses on governance
- members have clearer ways to contribute
The rules do not force involvement — they make it easier.
